More people are asking AI for a lawyer, and the AI can only recommend firms it can read. Here is what makes a site readable to these models, and how to tell if yours is.
A growing number of people looking for a lawyer are not searching the old way. They ask an AI, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI answers, and take the two or three firms it names. Which raises a question most firms have never had to think about: when one of these models looks at your site, can it actually read what is there?
Why readability is the whole game
An AI answer engine can only recommend a firm it understands. It visits your site, tries to make sense of who you are, what you practice, and where, and uses that to decide whether to put you in the answer. If it cannot parse your pages, you are not in the running, no matter how good the firm is.
This is different from ranking on Google, and worth keeping straight. We are not talking about being number one on a results page. We are talking about whether the model can read you well enough to mention you at all. Visibility, not ranking.
What makes a site hard for AI to read
A few common things quietly make a site opaque to these models.
- Content that only appears after heavy scripting. If the words a visitor sees are assembled by code that a simple reader never runs, the model may see a nearly blank page.
- Key facts locked in images. Your practice areas, locations, and credentials as pictures with no text equivalent are invisible to a reader that works in words.
- Vague, unstructured pages. If a page never plainly states what you do and where, a model has nothing clear to extract.
- No signals of who and where you are. Firms that do not clearly state their practice areas and service area are hard to match to a location-specific question.
How to tell where you stand
You cannot fix what you cannot see, and most firms have no window into this. Scout Recon tracks which AI models are crawling your site, how often, and which pages, and measures how much of your site is being served in a form these readers can actually use. The blind spot becomes a dashboard: you can see the gaps and close them.
Two honest caveats, because this field invites overclaiming. AI search is new and moving fast, so we measure your visibility and read-readiness rather than promise placement, and we never promise a ranking. Crawl activity is one signal among several, not a guarantee of appearing in any given answer.
The firms that get readable now will be the ones AI recommends as this shift accelerates. For how visibility differs from ranking, see AI answer visibility is not Google ranking. To see who is reading your site today, book a demo.
